NRSWA Operatives Course

Course Overview

The NRSWA supervisor course is designed to provide learners who will undertake works on roads / highways with the knowledge to complete their operations safely. Promoting the  reduction of any risk posed to themselves, their colleagues and the public, along with learning about, and how to comply with the applicable legislation e.g New Roads and Street Works Act 1991 and HSG47 Avoiding Danger from Underground Services.

THE NRSWA Streetworks course is made up of both practical and classroom training which then the learners will be assessed via practical observation testing and theory based testing on a tablet in the classroom with a 80% pass mark required to achieve a pass. Learners will be allowed 2 x re-sits if pass mark not achieved which can be done the same day.

Learning Outcomes

• Improve learners’ knowledge of the highlighting of risks and implementing control measures via risk assessment.
• Understanding of utility drawings, the presence of street furniture (e.g. streetlights, BT boxes) and ground scarring.) Methods of detecting underground serviced, marking up and safe excavation in line with HSG47 requirement.
• How to safely and compliantly set up signing lighting and guarding in line with the safety at Streetworks Red Book.
• How to safely and compliantly backfill and reinstate excavations in line with HAUC requirements.

The below units can be completed during this course

• • A – Location and avoidance of underground apparatus (CAT and Genny training– can be attended as an individual course)
  • 01 – Signing, lighting and guarding (can be attended as an individual course)
  • 02 – Excavation in the highway
  • 03 – Reinstatement and compaction of backfill materials
  • 04 – Reinstatement of sub-base and road in non-bituminous materials
  • 05 – Reinstatement in cold-lay bituminous materials
  • 08 – Reinstatement of modular surfaces and concrete footways
