Medium Risk Confined Space Training

Course Overview

What is a confined space?

• A space that’s enclosed or largely enclosed
• A space with a risk of fire, explosion, asphyxiation, drowning, or loss of consciousness
• A space that contains flammable or explosive atmospheres
• A space that contains harmful gases, fumes, or vapours
• A space that contains free-flowing solids or an increasing level of liquid

Examples of confined spaces

• Storage tanks, silos, and reaction vessels
• Enclosed drains and sewers
• Open-topped chambers, vats, and pits
• Combustion chambers in furnaces
• Ductwork
• Unventilated or poorly ventilated rooms

Risks in confined spaces 

• Fire or explosion
• Loss of consciousness or asphyxiation from gas, fumes, vapours, or lack of oxygen
• Drowning in liquid or a free-flowing solid

Medium-risk

Restricted access, potential for hazardous atmospheres, requiring additional safety measures like escape breathing apparatus.

Medium risk confined space training teaches people how to properly undertake a risk assessment and how to implement safe system of works for confined spaces, e.g. sewers, tunnels, storage vessels.

The training includes procedures for entering and exiting, using breathing apparatus, and responding to emergencies. Trainees will also learn about suitable equipment selection, pre-use inspection, and safe operation will also be covered in the course. Participants will learn how to properly use fall arrest systems to prevent accidents and injuries. By the end of the training, they will have a thorough understanding of how to safely work in low, medium, and high risk confined spaces. Please see below for a brief overview of course content.
