Course Overview

EUSR Category 2 – This course is designed to equip individuals working in utility excavations with the knowledge and skills to safely excavate and maintain holes and trenches using both hand tools and handheld power tools. EUSR Category 2 is designed to equip individuals with essential knowledge and skills for safely excavating and maintaining trenches and holes. The course includes planning and preparation, understanding utility drawings, recognizing hazards, and applying safe digging techniques. It also covers the use of hand tools and handheld power tools.

The key modules typically include:

• Planning and Preparation:

This involves risk assessments, ground type identification, and understanding the importance of PPE.

• Interpreting Utility Drawings:

Learning to read and understand utility drawings and line search documents to identify underground services.

• Safe Excavation Techniques:

Covering safe digging practices, maintaining excavations, and identifying potential hazards.

• Hazard Identification:

Understanding the dangers and hazards associated with excavations, including environmental hazards.

• Practical Skills:

Gaining hands-on experience with hand tools and handheld power tools and practicing safe excavation methods.

• Relevant Legislation:

Understanding and applying relevant legislation and guidance, such as HSG47 and CDM 2015.

• Permit-to-Work Procedures:

Learning about permit-to-work systems and their importance in excavation work.

• Emergency Procedures:

Knowing how to respond to emergencies that may occur during excavation.

Assessment:

The course culminates in both theoretical and practical assessments to demonstrate competency.

Upon successful completion of the training and assessments, individuals receive a virtual EUSR card, which is valid for three years and allows access to construction and excavation sites.
