What is a confined space?

  • A space that’s enclosed or largely enclosed
  • A space with a risk of fire, explosion, asphyxiation, drowning, or loss of consciousness
  • A space that contains flammable or explosive atmospheres
  • A space that contains harmful gases, fumes, or vapours
  • A space that contains free-flowing solids or an increasing level of liquid

Examples of confined spaces

  • Storage tanks, silos, and reaction vessels
  • Enclosed drains and sewers
  • Open-topped chambers, vats, and pits
  • Combustion chambers in furnaces
  • Ductwork
  • Unventilated or poorly ventilated rooms

Risks in confined spaces 

  • Fire or explosion
  • Loss of consciousness or asphyxiation from gas, fumes, vapours, or lack of oxygen
  • Drowning in liquid or a free-flowing solid
